Introduction

Woodworking has been my passion for decades, and one of the most captivating garden features to me is the waterwheel. It’s not only an engineering marvel, but also a technical challenge that combines beauty and functionality. The sound of running water, paired with the soothing rotation of a well-crafted wheel, is truly unmatched. Unfortunately, I’ve seen many waterwheels in disrepair, often beyond saving. That is why I’d like to share a few key tips on how to build a waterwheel that will last a lifetime.

1. Building Well-Balanced Waterwheels

The key points of how I build water wheels

  • Balance: My late father, Bunji, was a third-generation boat builder who crafted a 100-foot wooden sailboat for a theme park in Okinawa, Japan. He was honored with a National Cultural Merit Award for his work in reviving the legendary wooden sailboats known as Yanbarusen. His approach to boat building was truly unique. He would begin with a single tree, splitting it in half while facing east. The wood on the eastern side, dried by the sun, was lighter, while the western side remained heavier. This natural weight distribution allowed for perfect balance—using the lighter top portion for the bow and the denser base for the stern. Though this method isn’t practical today, I apply the same principle when building waterwheels. By carefully selecting and evenly distributing parts from the same lumber across both sides, I ensure the wheel remains balanced, just as my father did with his boats.
  • Joinery: The structure of my waterwheels features both circular outlines, which makes it a challenge to affix the paddles. However, my approach of multi-angled hidden joinery makes the construction process smoother with minimal use of fasteners. Paddles easily slide into the notches, securing the connections and extending the lifespan of the wheel. I also avoid mixing different wood species, and for the inner lines, I use sheet metal to ensure water tightness around the paddles.
  • Shaft: A solid shaft is crucial for connecting the wheel panels. I use a stainless steel rod for the shaft, which I then conceal with a wooden tube for a more aesthetic appearance. The key to a long-lasting, functional waterwheel lies in the precision with which the shaft is aligned at the center of the wheel panels. If the shaft or the alignment is off, the waterwheel won’t rotate properly and will soon stop working. An off-center shaft cannot be fixed once it’s built. Unlike traditional designs, my shafts remain fixed while the wheel itself rotates on two bearings, ensuring efficient and reliable movement.
  • Position of Bearings: Unlike traditional waterwheels, I mount two pillow block bearings on my wheels to reduce strain and maintain proper alignment. This setup ensures smooth, consistent movement with minimal resistance.
  • Stand: All of my water wheels are designed to be free-standing, mounted on a stand. This makes shipping and installation much easier, reducing the need for heavy site work. Many waterwheels are attached to walls, but this presents a challenge in leveling the long shaft and supporting the weight of the wheel during installation. My stand-based design eliminates that complication.

"The waterwheel accepts water and turns and gives it away, weeping."

3. Color Pallets

Consider plants that thrive in your climate:

Some of my favorites are:

  • Japanese Cherry trees
  • Wisteria
  • Japanese Maple trees
  • Iris
  • Water lilies

Many Japanese garden also features bamboos. However bamboos are invasive and require a barrier to contain the roots, don't do well in the dry climate in Southern California.
